Updates & News

Support for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
Amigos recognizes the importance of IMLS funding across our region and nationally. IMLS supports services delivered in partnership with state libraries, innovative and expanded programming for libraries and their communities, and the development of future services from library consortia and networks. In response to the recent executive order calling for the elimination of non-statutory components and functions of IMLS, library advocates are encouraged to contact their members of congress and voice their support for IMLS and the library services that make a difference in our communities.

Free for Members Means Free for All Member Library Employees
Stretching professional development budgets can be challenging, but Amigos makes it easier. Institutional membership benefits extend to all employees, granting them access to all of Amigos' free continuing education offerings, including the Essentials Series, online conferences, Know & Go 1-hour webinars, and NISO webinars. Managers and administrators can streamline staff access by bookmarking the Free for Members page and sharing it with their teams. Can’t attend a live session? No problem—recordings are available for added flexibility.

For questions about the courses offered, reach out to the Amigos Continuing Education Team (Chris Pryor and Naomi Gonzales) at learning@amigos.org.

The Latest in The Essentials Series
The response to our four previous sessions on Customer Service, Workplace Communication, Conducting the Reference Interview, and Library Values, has been incredibly positive and we are thrilled members find the series valuable and engaging.

The latest Essentials session tackles the fundamental yet often overlooked skills of effective teaching and presenting. Perfect for library staff who have ever found themselves wondering "How did I get here?" while in front of an audience, Teaching and Presenting in the Profession is designed for those who lead training and/or presentations.

Register today for the April 3, 2025, session to learn adaptable techniques for engaging audiences with confidence. As always, Amigos members enjoy free registration and access to recordings for three months.

The Essentials series joins Amigos' Know & Go classes and Online Conferences as another free member benefit to support staff development and growth. Amigos members who register have access to session recordings for three months once the class has ended.

Training Preview

Spring Training Preview with Miguel Figueroa
Miguel Figueroa is President and CEO at Amigos. We asked Miguel to answer a few questions for us as we look ahead to our Spring schedule.

What course are you most excited to teach this quarter (and why)?

I’m teaching an undergraduate course this semester for San José State University (SJSU) focusing a lot on trends in technology. So, I’m looking forward to teaching my Know & Go: Trends and Changes for the Future of Libraries session in June. Whenever we talk trends there’s a big focus on technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), but as I state often in my SJSU class, those technology trends exist in a broader context of demographic, economic, government, environmental, and societal change. I’m looking forward to rebalancing my trend scanning in preparation for the June Know & Go.

What course would you most like to take this quarter (and why)?

Parliamentary Procedure 101. Parliamentary procedure is one of those things that you don’t think about until you really need it – and then everyone scrambles to find Robert's Rules of Order and hopes they have the most current edition. And Donald Garrett is a real expert in this area who has taught several times for Amigos.

How are you spending your training time? What are you learning about right now?

I’ve had the good fortune to participate in a couple faculty development sessions through Cal State, including an excellent series on achieving equitable student outcomes and another series on AI tools for teaching and learning. I’ve continued to think about the training and instruction from those series and have tried to continue building in those areas.

How did you start out training in libraries - and how are you continuing to grow as a trainer?

My first real training experience started when I worked at NYU Medical Center as part of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. I had to develop training on DOCLINE, the National Library of Medicine’s ILL request routing tool, and LinkOut, a tool that linked library resources to NLM and NCBI databases. But I started my career in libraries working for a publisher of library science books, Neal-Schuman Publishers. That was a real education in organizing content in way that makes sense for readers and learners. I think of myself as more of a presenter than a trainer/teacher. Taking on the teaching roles at SJSU and involving myself more in Amigos’ CES offerings has really helped me focus more on learning objectives and outcomes and helping participants walk away with new skills as much as information. It’s a process.

Join us for the Amigos Community Conversation, "By Any Other Name: Belonging and Engagement in Libraries"
In a political climate where terms like diversity, equity, and inclusion face increasing challenges, many institutions have pivoted to new terms like belonging, community engagement, or student development. Join library leaders for a discussion about their approaches to this politicized space and how they are finding paths to fulfilling their organization’s commitments to reflecting and welcoming the communities they serve.

Register today as our panelists, Monique Christian Long from Southern Methodist University Libraries, Brenda Linares from the University of Missouri Kansas City University Libraries, and Carmaleta McKinnis-Williams from Austin Public Library lead this guided discussion at the Amigos Community Conversation on April 22, 2025 from 1:00-3:00 pm CT.
